Kitchen trends in 2020 are set to be just as eccentric as they are functional. Here’s the lowdown on some of the prominent kitchen features we can expect to see gain popularity in 2020 and beyond…

1. Dark blue

2020 is the year we can expect to see more blue in all aspects of interior design. Following Pantone naming Classic Blue as the official colour of the year, it’s fair to assume that this will have a huge effect on design decisions in 2020.

The use of blue has been rising in popularity, with 2019 seeing dark blues take centre stage in homes across the UK. So, it’s not surprising to see the trend continue into the new year.

2. Ladders instead of larders

Smart storage is the solution many of us have been looking for, and can certainly increase the functionality of your kitchen. While open shelving is becoming more favourable, there is an unlikely star we can expect to see a lot of in 2020: the ladder.

One of the highlights of this storage trend is the recent rise (no pun intended) in the use of ladders as shelving. Easy to manoeuvre and move on a whim, a ladder offers the flexibility and flair that the traditional shelving unit severely lacks.

The traditional larders and units could be on their way out as the humble ladder finds its way out of the garden and into the kitchen.

3.  Statement sinks

How much thought have you put into your kitchen sink? It’s a feature that many people leave until last, but that could all change in 2020. A statement sink could become the main feature of your kitchen. Lavish taps and unconventional basins could set your sink apart from the rest and create an eyecatching talking point.

At Marble Supreme, we offer a range of sinks and accessories

4. Beautiful backsplashes

It’s time to make the most of your kitchen backsplashes. Designers are loving backsplashes that tie in with kitchen countertops. Got marble, quartz or granite worktops? Create a uniformed look and use that same material for your splashback – Marble and quartz, in particular (see our stock here), are set to be favourites of 2020.

Not sure if a splashback is right for your kitchen? Read our blog to discover how a short or full splashback could benefit you

5. Unconventional islands

Have you ever seen a double island? The unusual design is gaining popularity and could prove to be incredibly useful for anyone craving more space to entertain. Beware if your kitchen is on the smaller side though! Squeezing in a double island could make your kitchen feel cramped and unusable. You can find out which layouts work best for different kitchens with our kitchen layouts guide.

If the idea of a double island doesn’t appeal to you, the new gravity-defying island could be a great alternative. Providing you with a spark of style, an island that’s cut out on one side can provide much-needed space below – with the cutaway creating the illusion of a much more spacious kitchen.

6. Dark surfaces

Dark floorboards had a moment of fame in the design world last year, and it looks like the popularity of dark surfaces could grow in 2020.

If a dark floorboard doesn’t appeal to you, dark countertops or cabinets are worthy substitutes. It can be hard to balance the contrast of light and dark if you are choosing a dark surface. It’s key to make sure the rest of your kitchen is light and bright to ensure you achieve the intended effect. Read our blog to find out exactly how to pick the right colour for your worktops

7. Pops of colour

A trend that many designers think will rule 2020, is experimentation with colour. Think random pops of colour in an otherwise very minimal kitchen. Most notably, the soon to be coveted two-toned cabinet is a trend that we think will be in vogue for years to come.

8. Sustainable materials

Sustainability and environmentally conscious products were a huge talking point of 2019 across all industries, so it’s no surprise that this will continue to affect how we choose materials in our homes. Picking materials that are ethically-sourced is becoming a top priority of many people and has led to a rise in the use of reclaimed wood in the kitchen

We always make sure our stock is sourced ethically – and 2020 will, no doubt, see a rise in demand for sustainable products across different trades. If you’re considering using wood in your kitchen, find out more about the pros and cons with our stone vs wood worktop blog.

So there we go, watch out for those trends in 2020! If you want a kitchen that’s style-savvy, you’ve got a headstart. Do any of the trends appeal to you?

Engineered stone is one of the most popular materials for kitchen worktops around the world. In recent years it’s seen a surge in demand as its beautiful appearance and durable nature lends itself as the perfect surface.

At Marble Supreme, we stock four popular quartz brands, in particular, Compaq, Caesarstone, Silestone and Unistone. We stock these brands because they each offer something different. But choosing a brand isn’t always easy. With so many different brands available, each offering different colours and patterns, we understand that it can get confusing. So, in no particular order, we’ve broken down the top nine brands!

  1. Caesarstone – Known as the “original” quartz company, Caesarstone was founded in 1987. Since then it’s grown to provide its stunning quartz stone to over 50 countries across the world. The stone is both practical and attractive. It’s used domestically for worktops and floors as well as commercially in museums and offices. View the Caesarstone we offer here
  2. Compaq – Compaq stone has an exceptional aesthetic appeal, as well as being particularly resistant to wear. It’s ideal for areas with high-traffic because of how hard it is. In fact, Compaq is manufactured to be tougher than natural quartz, so it’s performance is much greater. It’s available in a wide range of thicknesses and finishes. View the Compaq stone we offer here
  3. Unistone – Unistone is one of the newest brands in the stone world. It’s engineered using the well-known Breton-technology. As a quartz compound, it’s extremely hard-wearing and is available in a wide combination of colours. View the Unistone we offer here
  4. Silestone – Silestone provides virtually unlimited possibilities in terms of applications. It’s perfect for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, tabletops, floors and even shelving. View the Silestone we offer here.
  5. Cambria – Cambria is a high-end brand, usually only available from specialists. As a luxury engineered-stone brand, it’s coveted for its beauty and dedication to environmental sustainability.
  6. Technistone – Technistone is a premium product that’s wonderful for commercial, industrial and private residences. Consisting of 93% natural quartz and granite minerals it can be easily blended with a variety of coloured pigments and resin.
  7. Okite – Okite is composed of a mix of natural quartz particles and a polymer resin, that’s becoming an increasingly popular choice for modern kitchen worktops. Claimed to be five times stronger than granite, it’s a tough stone with a luxury feel.
  8. Corian Quartz – Formerly know as Zodiaq, Corian Quartz comes is available in a range of 50+ colours and patterns. It’s a popular choice for those looking for a solid-surface. It’s a popular choice among architects and interior designers.
  9. Santa Margarita Quartz – With a colour range inspired by the brand’s roots in Italy, the Santa Margarita Quartz line is a more high-end brand. The brand offers both standard and jumbo sizes of their slabs.

The ten brands above offer countless stunning colour and pattern options for your worktops. Each brand has its own style and price-point. Choosing the right colour for your kitchen countertop is no easy task, but it’s definitely something you’ll want to spend the time to get right! After all, your new kitchen is a big investment, and a space you’ll live in for years to come.

You need to choose a colour that not only works now but will continue to look great into the future.

The good news is that here at Marble Supreme, we offer a huge variety of colours (not to mention materials) — so you know you’ll be able to pick the colour that suits you.

The question is, how do you pick that colour? Well, that’s what this blog is all about. So let’s get going with some advice.

1: The rest of the room is important, but it can (and will change).

The first thing to remember is that it’s likely your kitchen paint job and appliances will change over time. This means that it’s worth considering a more neutral colour that pairs nicely with a variety of other colours, rather than matching directly to your current colour scheme. That’s not to say you can’t choose your favourite colour. Remember, you can always choose a worktop that has splashes or veins of the colour you love.

2: Think about your undertones.

Undertones are an important part of the colour scheme of your kitchen. Make sure that you take note of the undertones you have in your paint and cabinets and use that knowledge to inform which countertop colour you choose. Keep in mind that the colour of your worktops can change how an undertone looks, giving an overall cooler or warmer feel.

3: Use kitchen worktop samples.

Samples of potential worktop material are a great way to check if your kitchen colour scheme makes sense. We offer samples of many of our worktops, so you can choose a few, then go home and make sure it works before fully investing in one choice. Or have a look at our previous work for inspiration!

4: Plain or complex?

Another thing to consider is how you combine patterns in your kitchen with patterns in your worktop. A worktop that has a lot going on, combined with wallpaper that also has a lot going on could look a little messy. So make sure that you think carefully about striking the right balance unless intentional pattern clashes are your style. Don’t forget that there are plenty of different finishes available too!

5: Don’t forget about your flooring.

It’s easy to focus on whether your worktops will match your walls or cabinets and lose sight of your kitchen as a whole. But it’s important to consider the colour of your flooring. Ideally, the finish of your flooring (matte or glossy), should match your worktops to ensure that your kitchen looks cohesive. Not everything has to match though, and the contrast of light worktops look beautiful against dark flooring and vice versa.

What next?

It’s a lot to think about, but it’s worth taking your time. It can also help to see the colours of countertops to spark your imagination and get you thinking about possible colour combos.

To do this, just pop into our Bristol showroom, where we have a huge variety of kitchen worktops on show. Or take a look at our Facebook, where we’re always posting photos of our latest work!

Marble Supreme on the silver screen

We’re less than a month in, and 2019 is already a stand-out year for us here at Marble Supreme.

We kicked off in January with more work on the books than ever before. And the cherry on top: our handiwork appeared on national television!

On 15th January, season two, episode three of ITV’s “Love Your Home and Garden” aired,  featuring a unique kitchen island with a beautiful black granite worktop — made by us.

Black granite kitchen worktop. Half inside, half outside. Split by window.

Taking part in the show was a fantastic experience for our team. The work was challenging (as you’ll be able to see from the photo), but the final result was really something special.

A fantastic example of how granite can transform your kitchen

It’s a great example of how choosing the right worktop can play a huge part in the transformation of your kitchen — whether you opt for granite, quartz or marble. We also think it’s a really inspirational design, and hope to produce more work like it in the future.

If you want to find out more about the process of making the show — and the fascinating story behind the couple whose house was transformed — make sure to read this excellent blog post by the presenters of the show (and architects) George + Ewald

And, if you‘d like an informal chat about how we can help transform your kitchen, get in touch today.
