Granite is one of the most popular materials for kitchen worktops, and it’s easy to see why. It is strong, easy to clean, long lasting and is a great way to add luxury to your kitchen. Whether you’re looking for a striking granite kitchen island or low maintenance kitchen countertops, make sure to take a look at the extensive range of granite available at Marble Supreme.

Advantages of granite countertops

There are a lot of pros of granite countertops, hence its popularity. Not only is it nice aesthetically, it’s also extremely well suited to the harsh kitchen environment.

How hard is granite on the mohs scale?

The mohs scale is a scale from 1 to 10 which ranks the scratch resistance of minerals. At 1 on the scale you can find talc, which is extremely soft, and at 10 is diamond. Granite is a 6 on the mohs scale, which is above marble which is 3 but just under quartz which is 7.

This makes granite an excellent option if you want strong worktops from a natural stone.

Natural and unique

Granite is a natural stone which means that if you have it in your home it is completely unique. Granite is an igneous rock and this means that it is formed through the cooling and hardening of magma. At Marble Supreme we have a large variety of granite in a number of colours and patterns, as you can see below. However, if any catch your eye it’s worth visiting our workshop to see the material in person to fully appreciate it.

Granite is hygienic

When looking for kitchen worktops it is important that the material you choose is hygienic and easy to clean. All natural stone is slightly porous, meaning it’s not completely smooth, however, granite is less porous than lots of other materials. This means that it is less likely to harbour bacteria and easy to keep clean with a mild antibacterial dish soap. Granite can also be made less porous by sealing it.

Natural heat resistance

Granite is naturally heat resistant. Due to the nature of how it is formed (over a long time from cooled magma) it offers a kind of insulation to the hotness of dishes in the kitchen.

Long lasting worktops

When granite is formed for hot magma the cooling process takes a very long time, and slower rates of crystallisation creates stronger bonds between the rock molecules. The slow crystallisation is what gives granite its strength. This means granite worktops can last a really long time before needing to be replaced.

Granite is a great all round material for kitchen worktops, it is eye catching and beautiful to look at, as well as being extremely well suited to the kitchen environment. At Marble Supreme not only do we stock a large range of quality granite, but we are also expert craftsmen with over 65 years of experience in bespoke natural stone projects. Now I’m sure you’ve heard of Granite before. You’ve probably also seen hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of images showcasing beautifully finished granite kitchen worktops. But have you ever wondered how it gets there? How does it go from an untouched natural resource just beneath the earth’s surface, through to a polished, pristine stone slab, shaped specifically for your kitchen?

Well that’s exactly what we are going to cover in this article! Read on to find out more…

What is granite?

To start let’s take a look at what Granite actually is and how it is formed.

Granite is the best-known igneous rock. It forms overtime from the slow crystallisation of magma just beneath the earth’s surface. The composition of quartz and feldspar often gives granite a red, grey, pink or white colour, with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock.

It is one of the most well known natural stones in the world and is used for the production of several objects including paving stone, curbing, kitchen worktops, floor tiles and even cemetery monuments. It’s all around us.

The quarrying process

Unlike other natural resources that are found deep within the earth’s core, Granite forms close to the surface and as a result shallow quarries are all that is needed to get the raw granite into manageable small stone blocks for shipment. To do this, small holes are drilled in the shape of the desire block size. Carefully planned explosives are then placed into the holes in order to create blasts big enough to separate the block of granite from the bedrock without breaking the block itself.

Extreme care is taken throughout this whole process in order to ensure safe transfer of the granite, and the safety of the minors working in the stone quarries.

Granite is an extremely popular material for kitchen worktops. It is a classic and luxurious stone to use in the home. It benefits from being exceptionally strong (6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale) and very difficult to chip through everyday wear and tear. However, there are also a number of granite alternatives, which are worth finding out about before you make any final decisions.

Granite is also a very hygienic material for the kitchen; although it is quite porous in its raw form, once it is polished and sealed this is no longer the case. Cleaning is incredibly easy; you will only need water and mild soap to keep your granite countertop looking its best and remaining clean and safe for your family.

Though granite is especially useful and well suited to kitchen worktops, if you are in the process of redesigning your kitchen you will want to consider all your options and make an educated decision. At Marble Supreme, we are master craftsmen with over 65 years of industry experience, so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch. Here are some alternative materials to the hugely popular granite which you may not have considered yet.

Marble for Kitchen Worktops

Marble is a natural stone like granite that can often be found in kitchens. It is slightly softer than granite so if you are worried about chips and scratches granite may be better. However, it should be noted that even though it is softer than granite it is still stone, and can therefore still withstand a lot.

Both granite and marble are natural with completely unique patterning in every slab, so in terms of aesthetic, it is completely down to your preference. Marble does tend to have more regular and large patterns, such as veining throughout the material which is a more desirable look. It is good to view as many different slabs of marble and granite as you can so you can decide what you prefer. A good way to do this is to book a visit to our showroom.

In terms of maintenance, marble requires slightly more maintenance than granite. The composition of marble includes calcium carbonate which means it is more likely to get stained by acidic spills, these should be cleaned up promptly to prevent permanent discolouration.

Quartz or Granite For Kitchen Worktops

Quartz is another kitchen worktop alternative to granite. Quartz is even stronger and more durable than granite, in hardness it is second only to precious stones. Quartz for kitchen worktops, unlike granite and marble, is not natural. The quartz used in worktops comprises around 93% quartz and 7% resin.

The fact the quartz is man-made means that there are more options in terms of colour for quartz which is great if you need to colour match to fit your interior. However, these colours and patterns are artificial, and will therefore not be like the unique natural beauty which can be found from marble or granite.

The best way to choose a material for your kitchen worktops is to see the options for yourself. They all have their pros and cons, and the decision is a personal one. Even so, our expert craftsmen can help you every step of the way and offer advice based on your own needs. Get in contact today or visit our workshop to find out more.

Granite has been the go-to countertop material for homeowners for decades.

As a natural material, it has plenty of valued qualities. It’s known as the ‘stone of choice’ for interior decorators and designers for a reason. So why is granite such a popular choice?

Take a look at our ultimate guide to granite…

What is Granite?

In technical terms, granite is crystalline igneous rock and is one of the hardest materials in the world.

Granite worktops are made up of 100% pure and natural stone, mined straight from the earth.

Unlike quartz worktops, a granite worktop it is totally natural (other than a polish and sealant).

Beneficial Qualities

Granite is admired for it’s many beneficial qualities, including but not limited to…

  • Stain-reistantance
  • Durablility
  • Strength
  • Low maintenance (easy to clean)
  • Heat-resistantance
  • Geniune ‘natural’ texture

Cost

Granite can be at the higher-end of most people’s budget, so it’s worth seriously considering whether it is economically the right choice.

New reports have found that having a high-quality kitchen in your home can increase the value of your property if you choose to sell. On the other hand, it was also found that an old and outdated kitchen could actually have a negative effect on property value.

If you’re in a position to spend a bit more on your worktops, it could be a real investment in the long-run!

What does it look like in kitchens?

Granite can come in many different colours and finishes. As a natural product there are certain limitations in terms of customisations. If you’re looking for something neon or patterned it might be worth exploring a more synthetic avenue, such as quartz.

Granite can still come in a variety of colours to suit your taste.

Much like marble, all slabs of granite are different in their own way so if you’re looking to keep your worktops as uniform as possible it’s worth mentioning this to your supplier so your stone comes from the same batch where possible.

How to care for granite

We’ve created a number of guides to help you understand the best approach to keeping your worktops looking sparkling clean.

The general consensus is to wipe down the surface with warm water and mild soap. It’s less fragile that marble so requires a little-less hawk-eyed attention.

The downsides

Although granite is often thought to be the best material, like all materials, it’s important to weigh up the benefits with the potential downsides.

Granite can be expensive and is extraordinarily heavy compared to other materials available.

Take a look at our VS guides if you’re wondering if Marble or Quartz could be a better fit for your needs

How to pick the right material

Kitchen trends in 2021 are all pointing towards mixing and matching textures in the kitchen. So if you can’t choose between materials, why not experiment with two contrasting worktops?

The other popular contenders to granite are marble and quartz, each of which have their own personal benefits and limitations.

What next?

Take a look at our previous work, many of which include stunning granite kitchen countertops.

Still unsure whether to pick granite? Here’s what you should look for

We’ve produced many blogs comparing different worktops materials, but we always seem to come across the same question: is granite really the best choice for kitchen countertops?

Time and time again, granite appears to be the superior material for those looking for stone worktops. So we’ve delved deeper into the pros and cons of this popular stone.

Properties of granite

  • Granite is a tough, igneous rock and is probably the most recognisable of all the countertop materials.
  • It’s used for a wide variety of products including worktops, floor tiles, paving stones and monuments.
  • Granite has been used in interior and exterior constructions for thousands of years. It is considered a prestigious material, admired for its elegance, durability and strength.

What makes it better than other materials?

  • Granite has the longest life expectancy, so if you’re looking for worktops that will stand the test of time, it’s longevity is unrivalled.
  • Granite is also very low maintenance. Other than needing a wipe down after use, a good sealant will stop it from absorbing liquids or developing stains as easily as marble.
  • It is also impervious to heat, so you can rest assured that hot pans and plates will not melt or crack the surface. This sets granite apart from other worktop materials, as marble, quartz and laminate are all susceptible to heat damage.

  • It’s also available in a wide range of colours. Many granite owners suggest picking lighter colours if you’re concerned about the stone retaining that ‘just installed’ look.
  • In more recent years, granite has been favoured for its environmentally friendly sourcing and hazardous-chemical-free maintenance.
  • Granite is the toughest natural stone and therefore lends itself well to use in the kitchen or bathroom.

Unlike softer materials such as marble, you don’t need to worry as much over handling it with care. It can take some rough and tumble, and may even dull your knives should you choose to cut directly on its surface (we suggest you use a cutting block instead).

Even if the worktop does sustain damage, chips in granite can be repaired by a professional relatively easily.

What are the limitations of granite?

  • If you want your granite worktops to stay resistant to wear and tear, it’s worth sealing it. This may be a con, as forgetting to top up sealants could lead to damage, however, at Marble Supreme we’ll advise you on the right sealant and treatments for your worktops.

If you stay on top of sealing (which will ultimately only need to be done once or twice a year), your worktops shouldn’t cause you any serious issues.

  • Granite is incredibly heavy, so it’s vital to pick a frame that can take the weight of the worktops.
  • Granite can be on the more expensive side, but when factoring in just how long it will last you as well as the added property value of having a good kitchen, it’s worth the investment.

So, is granite the best choice for you?

It’s easy to see why granite is such a popular material. But the most important question is, is it right for you?

All kitchen worktops materials have different limitations, so it’s important to pick the material that suits your needs best. You can find direct comparisons in our stone ‘VS’ series

We stock plenty of different styles and colours of granite, why not visit our Bristol showroom (currently subject to our social distancing promise) to see your options in person?

There are plenty of claims across the industry that stone worktops can last a lifetime, but how long can you expect your kitchen worktops to last in your home? Replacing a worktop can be an intimidating prospect, so how can you avoid picking a worktop that won’t hold it’s integrity?

The majority of stone kitchen worktops are remarkably durable and can withstand a variety of wear and tear. Each material has plenty of pros and cons to consider.

Investing in a high-quality kitchen worktop could add value to your home should you choose to sell. With an estimated 6% rise in value to your home.

So, how long do different stone worktops last?

Marble

There’s a reason why marble has been used to form historical buildings and sculptures for thousands of years, it’s just as strong as it is beautiful.

Marble is a popular material of choice for kitchen worktops, and it’s easy to see why.

Despite being softer than granite and quartz, it has naturally heat-resistant qualities and is incredibly versatile.

Typically, a marble worktop will last upwards of 10-15 years.

If the marble is placed in an area that experiences low-traffic, it will generally last longer.

Granite

In comparison to other worktops materials, granite has the longest life expectancy.

On average, a granite worktop can stay in good condition for over 25 years. So, investing in a granite worktop really will pay off in the long run.

Did you know granite is one of the hardest substances in the world, second only to diamonds?

There are plenty of factors that will contribute to the condition of your granite. For example, making sure your worktop is regularly sealed will help protect it from everyday spills and stains.

Quartz

Although Quartz is an engineered stone composed of man-made resins, it actually has a shorter expected life span than most natural stone.

Quartz worktops are also more prone to sun damage and heat damage from contact with hot pots and pans.

However, a high-quality quartz worktop can still last for an average of 15 years before a replacement may be needed.

Looking to replace your old worktops? Read more about how to prepare for new worktops

So, what’s the catch?

Your worktops can last for a very long time, however, how well you care for them will have a big effect on their longevity.

Natural stone is susceptible to water damage, chips and cracks. Stains and scratches may not have a huge effect on longevity but it’s important to stay aware of these superficial issues because in high-volume they can contribute to a weakening of the stone. The softer the stone, the higher the risk of scarring and chipping.

If you are worried about your stone coping with the stress of high-traffic, it might be best to explore granite and quartz options for your worktops rather than marble.

Investing in a stone kitchen worktop will benefit you for a lifetime if you care for them. And if you’re looking for peace of mind, you can rest easy knowing that we offer a 15-year warranty in association with Dry-Treat

Want to know how to care for your worktops? Read our blogs on how to clean your worktops, whether they are granitequartz or marble

Still not sure which stone is right for you?

Vanity units are an excellent choice for those who are installing a new bathroom, wet room or simply giving their current bathroom that much needed makeover. They are designed to hold the basin, conceal unsightly pipework and ensure you have sufficient bathroom storage space. But without proper care, they can end up losing their appeal.

In order to keep your vanity unit looking its best, we’ve put together this simple guide with easy steps to follow and tips to ensure your vanity unit remains a statement in your home. Plus, we offer some great alternative, eco-friendly cleaning tips for you to consider.

GRANITE VANITY UNITS

Granite is one of the most popular choices for vanity units and countertops. It is naturally antibacterial and highly resistant to scratching and staining but it’s still important to maintain granite surfaces properly, and that includes understanding how to clean granite safely.

How To Clean Granite

To keep granite shiny, we recommend regular cleaning with a PH-balanced product or a mixture of detergent and warm water. You’ll need to remove any items from the surface of your bathroom vanity unit and wipe down the countertops with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scouring pads because they may scratch the surface, and remember to buff out any visible streaks afterwards.

Removing Stains From Granite

To remove oil-based stains like dirt or grease, we recommend a commercial alkaline degreaser. For tough, organic stains like wine or coffee, a commercial stone poultice is recommended but you can create your own (details to follow).

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips

If you’re trying to avoid using mass-produced, chemical-based cleaning products, we have collated the following green ways to maintain your bathroom vanity unit and countertop:

  • Try creating your own natural cleaning products using household items. Simply add hydrogen peroxide or acetone to baking soda until a paste is formed. Spread the mixture over granite using a clean cloth and repeat as necessary. Wipe the area dry and remove any excess to prevent leaving any sticky or cloudy residue behind.
  • Avoid using lemon, vinegar or acidic ingredients as they can damage the surface.
  • Once clean, try adding a few small drops of essential citrus oil onto your countertops to keep your vanity unit smelling lemony fresh.

MARBLE VANITY TOPS

Marble, composed mainly of calcium carbonate, is a metamorphic rock. It can vary in colour from neutral whites and creams to pinks, greys, browns and black. With its rich colours and luxurious feel, Marble is another popular choice for stone vanity units and vanity tops. It is versatile to work with and keeping it clean is actually easier than you may think. Just be sure to avoid products containing acid.

How To Clean Marble

To maintain your marble vanity unit, we recommend that you wipe all of the surfaces regularly. You can choose to use a commercial marble cleaner but it is also possible to use plain soap and water. Simply spray the countertops with your chosen cleaning product and scrub the surface gently. Wipe away any excess residue with a clean wet cloth and repeat as necessary. Then rub the countertops dry and buff with a soft absorbent cloth.

Removing Stains From Marble

The key to removing stains from marble is correctly identifying the origin of the stain and then applying the most appropriate cleaning method.

Organic stains like food, paper or urine cause a pinkish-brown discolouration and can be removed using a mixture of water and a non-ionic detergent. For stubborn or tough stains, we recommend a mixture of equal parts water, white spirit and detergent. This will need to be shaken regularly to maintain the emulsion and prevent the mixture from separating.

Iron or rust stains are orange or brown in colour and can be removed using a stone poultice. However, deep-seated metal stains can sometimes be difficult to remove. Biological stains like mildew are common in bathrooms and wet rooms. To remove these, we recommend using ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. Although gloves should always be worn when handling these toxic chemicals.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips

  • Purchase an eco-friendly detergent at your local store or online. Mix a couple of drops with warm water and use a soft microfibre cloth to wipe down all surfaces. Next, use a clean, damp cloth to remove any sticky residue and buff away smudges with another dry cloth.

QUARTZ STONE VANITY TOPS

Quartz stone is made from one of the hardest minerals on earth and is arguably the most durable stone for your bathroom vanity unit. It comes in a variety of beautiful colours and patterns and is resistant to staining and scratching. It can even contain a resin which means it does not have to be sealed.

The specific cleaning requirements of your quartz stone will depend on the location within your home and how often it is used, but quartz is not hard to maintain. The following guide should help ensure you are able to keep your quartz countertops looking brand new.

How To Clean Quartz Stone

For routine cleaning, we recommend wiping surfaces with a mixture of warm water and soap. This should be done as often as required, but the more often this happens the better maintained your bathroom vanity top will be. To get rid of dirt, you can use a recommended putty knife but be careful to only scrape gently.

Removing Stains From Quartz Stone

To remove tough stains from your vanity units, you will most likely need a cleaner that is specifically made for quartz. If you’re unsure what’s safe to use then please ask a member of our team or check out our helpful FAQ section. We’re always happy to provide free advice and hope we can answer any of your questions.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips

  • Avoid using multi-purpose wet wipes and opt for liquid cleaning products and reusable cloths. This should save you money and reduce the number of wet wipes that end up in landfill.
  • If you are set on using wet wipes, choose a biodegradable alternative and dispose of your wipes in the bin rather than flushing them away.

It all sounds simple and that’s because it is. Maintaining your stone bathroom vanity unit should never be a chore and we hope with these simple tips you’ll be well on your way to a sparkling surface.

Marble Supreme on the silver screen

We’re less than a month in, and 2019 is already a stand-out year for us here at Marble Supreme.

We kicked off in January with more work on the books than ever before. And the cherry on top: our handiwork appeared on national television!

On 15th January, season two, episode three of ITV’s “Love Your Home and Garden” aired,  featuring a unique kitchen island with a beautiful black granite worktop — made by us.

Black granite kitchen worktop. Half inside, half outside. Split by window.

Taking part in the show was a fantastic experience for our team. The work was challenging (as you’ll be able to see from the photo), but the final result was really something special.

A fantastic example of how granite can transform your kitchen

It’s a great example of how choosing the right worktop can play a huge part in the transformation of your kitchen — whether you opt for granite, quartz or marble. We also think it’s a really inspirational design, and hope to produce more work like it in the future.

If you want to find out more about the process of making the show — and the fascinating story behind the couple whose house was transformed — make sure to read this excellent blog post by the presenters of the show (and architects) George + Ewald

How to care for your granite kitchen worktop.

Granite worktops are low maintenance so there isn’t much to do. Clean up spills with a damp cloth. If you are unlucky to have staining then treat stains of an organic nature such as wine, coffee, nicotine, fruit juices and so on, by using a water-based stain remover. To remove dirt or grease we would recommend using an alkaline degreaser. We recommend you have your worktop treated with a stain-proofing sealant.

As one of only two Authorised dealers of Dry-Treat Sealant in the South West all kitchen worktops from Marble Supreme are sealed with a Dry-Treat world leading permanent impregnating sealer, for premium stain protection. We also provide you with our leading stone care product to keep your worktops looking beautiful and full of colour. It is a very low maintenance material.  If you buy your granite worktop from Marble Supreme, we will always be available with aftercare advice on how to care for your granite kitchen worktop. It’s all part of the service.

How to choose a granite worktop supplier?

There is so much choice when it comes to kitchen worktop suppliers, in granite or any other material. It’s always best to do your homework before instructing someone to build your granite worktop. But how do you know you are using a reputable, experienced and trustworthy company? The most important areas to check are;

  • Reviews from previous customers. Do they have a Google Business page or a Facebook page where you can see reviews?
  • Are they trading standards approved?
  • Find out if the owners are hands-on or not. Here at Marble Supreme, we are involved in every aspect of the process from quoting to fitting. This ensures a continuation of quality at every step.
  • Find out what is included in the quote price. Some companies have hidden charges like templating or delivery.
  • How flexible are they with delivery and installation? If you have a delay you want to know your worktops will be safely stored at the factory and won’t end up on your lawn for 2 weeks!

For more information on the above feel free to read our blog that goes into how to choose a worktop supplier in more detail.
