Granite is one of the most popular materials for kitchen worktops, and it’s easy to see why. It is strong, easy to clean, long lasting and is a great way to add luxury to your kitchen. Whether you’re looking for a striking granite kitchen island or low maintenance kitchen countertops, make sure to take a look at the extensive range of granite available at Marble Supreme.

Advantages of granite countertops

There are a lot of pros of granite countertops, hence its popularity. Not only is it nice aesthetically, it’s also extremely well suited to the harsh kitchen environment.

How hard is granite on the mohs scale?

The mohs scale is a scale from 1 to 10 which ranks the scratch resistance of minerals. At 1 on the scale you can find talc, which is extremely soft, and at 10 is diamond. Granite is a 6 on the mohs scale, which is above marble which is 3 but just under quartz which is 7.

This makes granite an excellent option if you want strong worktops from a natural stone.

Natural and unique

Granite is a natural stone which means that if you have it in your home it is completely unique. Granite is an igneous rock and this means that it is formed through the cooling and hardening of magma. At Marble Supreme we have a large variety of granite in a number of colours and patterns, as you can see below. However, if any catch your eye it’s worth visiting our workshop to see the material in person to fully appreciate it.

Granite is hygienic

When looking for kitchen worktops it is important that the material you choose is hygienic and easy to clean. All natural stone is slightly porous, meaning it’s not completely smooth, however, granite is less porous than lots of other materials. This means that it is less likely to harbour bacteria and easy to keep clean with a mild antibacterial dish soap. Granite can also be made less porous by sealing it.

Natural heat resistance

Granite is naturally heat resistant. Due to the nature of how it is formed (over a long time from cooled magma) it offers a kind of insulation to the hotness of dishes in the kitchen.

Long lasting worktops

When granite is formed for hot magma the cooling process takes a very long time, and slower rates of crystallisation creates stronger bonds between the rock molecules. The slow crystallisation is what gives granite its strength. This means granite worktops can last a really long time before needing to be replaced.

Granite is a great all round material for kitchen worktops, it is eye catching and beautiful to look at, as well as being extremely well suited to the kitchen environment. At Marble Supreme not only do we stock a large range of quality granite, but we are also expert craftsmen with over 65 years of experience in bespoke natural stone projects. Now I’m sure you’ve heard of Granite before. You’ve probably also seen hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of images showcasing beautifully finished granite kitchen worktops. But have you ever wondered how it gets there? How does it go from an untouched natural resource just beneath the earth’s surface, through to a polished, pristine stone slab, shaped specifically for your kitchen?

Well that’s exactly what we are going to cover in this article! Read on to find out more…

What is granite?

To start let’s take a look at what Granite actually is and how it is formed.

Granite is the best-known igneous rock. It forms overtime from the slow crystallisation of magma just beneath the earth’s surface. The composition of quartz and feldspar often gives granite a red, grey, pink or white colour, with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock.

It is one of the most well known natural stones in the world and is used for the production of several objects including paving stone, curbing, kitchen worktops, floor tiles and even cemetery monuments. It’s all around us.

The quarrying process

Unlike other natural resources that are found deep within the earth’s core, Granite forms close to the surface and as a result shallow quarries are all that is needed to get the raw granite into manageable small stone blocks for shipment. To do this, small holes are drilled in the shape of the desire block size. Carefully planned explosives are then placed into the holes in order to create blasts big enough to separate the block of granite from the bedrock without breaking the block itself.

Extreme care is taken throughout this whole process in order to ensure safe transfer of the granite, and the safety of the minors working in the stone quarries.

Silestone vs Technistone – What is the best quartz for you? https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/silestone-vs-technistone-what-is-the-best-quartz-for-you/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 14:03:18 +0000 https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/?p=51274 The post Silestone vs Technistone – What is the best quartz for you? appeared first on Marble Supreme.

]]>

With so many different types of stone out there it can feel daunting when it comes to refurbishing your kitchen or bathroom. Silestone and Technistone are both premium brands of quartz. They share many similarities and often what you pick will come down to availability, but some differences may impact your decision.

Production

Silestone is made by Spanish company Cosentino, which has had a wealth of experience in delivering high-quality innovative surfaces globally since 1979. They have not only pioneered Silestone but also other leading brands such as Dekton and Sensa by Cosentino.

Technistone, initially known as Bohemia Stone, is based in the Czech Republic, and was recently acquired by American company Wilsonart Engineered Surfaces and from there the company has demonstrated a solid distribution network to dozens of countries.

Non-porous

Both Silestone and Technistone are non-porous, making them stain-resistant. This is beneficial as it means that liquid spilt on surfaces are not absorbed and therefore can just be wiped off without leaving a stain, as long as the spillage is removed promptly.

Hygienic

The non-porous nature of both Silestone and Technistone makes them both extremely hygienic. As there are no pores on the surface, bacteria have nowhere to become lodged, unlike with more porous surfaces like wood.

Variety of colours

Quartz is booming in popularity, and one of the reasons for this is the wide range of colours and patterns available. Although both Silestone and Technistone have an incredible array of colour choices, Silestone has more, with over 71 different colour options compared to Technistone’s 52. It is easy to find a colour that compliments your room.

Low maintenance

When cleaning a quartz worktop, it is better not to use harsh chemicals and instead opt for a mild, non-bleach and non-abrasive soap. This applies to both Silestone and Technistone, with the properties of quartz meaning they are stain-resistant, but not stain-proof. This means spillages should be dealt with as soon as possible.

A durable long-term investment

Not all quartz is created equal and cutting corners in installation and cost can lead to replacements needed sooner than expected. Silestone and Technistone are both highly reputable and quality quartz. As long as you choose a master craftsman to fit your new worktops they can last over 15 years. This is also dependent on placement, as quartz can be damaged when in direct sunlight.

Silestone vs Technistone

Silestone and Technistone are both high-quality quartzes, with Silestone just having a slight edge in terms of colour palette. But in most cases, your choice will be based on availability and supplies. It is beneficial to contact an experienced stone craftsman and find out what kind of quartz they have available to you.

Contact Marble Supreme today and we can assist with any of your quartz queries.

Are Quartz Worktops Worth the Money? https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/are-quartz-worktops-worth-the-money/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 13:55:06 +0000 https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/?p=51269 The post Are Quartz Worktops Worth the Money? appeared first on Marble Supreme.

Quartz worktops don’t come cheap, but they’re well worth the price. There are lots of other potential countertop materials out there like laminate which can be more economical if you are looking for something short term. If you want to elevate your kitchen and boost the value and desirability of your home then you should definitely consider quartz for your worktop upgrades.

Durability of Quartz

Quartz is renowned for its durability and resistance to scratches. This means a quartz countertop will need replacing very infrequently. An Italian company created quartz countertops in 1963 with the aim of taking an extremely abundant material (quartz) and engineering it to be stronger than stone.

A material’s hardness is measured on the Mohs scale which is a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest. Quartz countertops come in at a 7 which is harder than granite which is a 6.

Quartz is extremely durable, but it is not indestructible and it is possible to chip or scratch, however, with average daily use this is extremely unlikely.

How easy is it to maintain quartz worktops?

Quartz benefits from looking as luxurious as granite and marble but with the added bonus of being less porous so it is extremely easy to keep clean and bacteria-free. Generally, all that is needed to keep quartz counters looking their best is wiping them down with soapy water. For more stubborn stains we recommend creating your own quartz cleaning solution. This is simply a half and half of water and 91% isopropyl. This should go in a spray bottle and be sprayed onto the stain and left for five minutes before being wiped off with a microfibre cloth.

What does quartz look like?

Quartz is an impressive material to have in your home, it has a luxurious look and feel. Quartz worktops are also a very easy to incorporate into your kitchen or bathroom as quartz comes in such a wide variety of colours and patterns from natural, neutral creams and greys, to eye-catching reds and greens.
If you are looking for an attractive stone with a lot of colour options that’s easy to maintain and will last you over a decade then quartz is definitely worth considering for your home. Speak to one of our experts at Marble Supreme if you have any questions about quartz or other stone for your home or business.

What Are Granite Alternatives For a Kitchen Worktop? https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/what-are-granite-alternatives-for-a-kitchen-worktop/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 13:45:30 +0000 https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/?p=51261 The post What Are Granite Alternatives For a Kitchen Worktop? appeared first on Marble Supreme.

Granite is an extremely popular material for kitchen worktops. It is a classic and luxurious stone to use in the home. It benefits from being exceptionally strong (6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale) and very difficult to chip through everyday wear and tear. However, there are also a number of granite alternatives, which are worth finding out about before you make any final decisions.

Granite is also a very hygienic material for the kitchen; although it is quite porous in its raw form, once it is polished and sealed this is no longer the case. Cleaning is incredibly easy; you will only need water and mild soap to keep your granite countertop looking its best and remaining clean and safe for your family.

Though granite is especially useful and well suited to kitchen worktops, if you are in the process of redesigning your kitchen you will want to consider all your options and make an educated decision. At Marble Supreme, we are master craftsmen with over 65 years of industry experience, so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch. Here are some alternative materials to the hugely popular granite which you may not have considered yet.

Marble for Kitchen Worktops

Marble is a natural stone like granite that can often be found in kitchens. It is slightly softer than granite so if you are worried about chips and scratches granite may be better. However, it should be noted that even though it is softer than granite it is still stone, and can therefore still withstand a lot.

Both granite and marble are natural with completely unique patterning in every slab, so in terms of aesthetic, it is completely down to your preference. Marble does tend to have more regular and large patterns, such as veining throughout the material which is a more desirable look. It is good to view as many different slabs of marble and granite as you can so you can decide what you prefer. A good way to do this is to book a visit to our showroom.

In terms of maintenance, marble requires slightly more maintenance than granite. The composition of marble includes calcium carbonate which means it is more likely to get stained by acidic spills, these should be cleaned up promptly to prevent permanent discolouration.

Quartz or Granite For Kitchen Worktops

Quartz is another kitchen worktop alternative to granite. Quartz is even stronger and more durable than granite, in hardness it is second only to precious stones. Quartz for kitchen worktops, unlike granite and marble, is not natural. The quartz used in worktops comprises around 93% quartz and 7% resin.

The fact the quartz is man-made means that there are more options in terms of colour for quartz which is great if you need to colour match to fit your interior. However, these colours and patterns are artificial, and will therefore not be like the unique natural beauty which can be found from marble or granite.

The best way to choose a material for your kitchen worktops is to see the options for yourself. They all have their pros and cons, and the decision is a personal one. Even so, our expert craftsmen can help you every step of the way and offer advice based on your own needs. Get in contact today or visit our workshop to find out more.

With a prevalence of bold colour choices, sustainable materials and the rise of the “smart kitchen” it’s an exciting time to remodel your kitchen as the possibilities are endless and there’s something to suit anyone.

Minimalist kitchens

Minimalist kitchens have been a favourite for many years now, which doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Sleek, clutter-free kitchens with no-fuss design are a go-to in many homes. Not only do minimalist kitchens look clean, but they are also easy to keep hygienic. For minimalist kitchens, you can expect to see airy all-white rooms and a focus on beautiful high-quality materials like marble, granite and quartz.

Marble

Marble is set to make a comeback this year. It has always been a luxurious and eye-catching material but has lost popularity in recent years to materials like quartz with an abundance of colour options. The simplicity and uniqueness of marble will be coming back to many homes this year. With each piece being completely natural and one of a kind, it’s an exciting centrepiece for your home.

Marble can last a long time when fitted by professionals, if you’re considering marble for your kitchen project make sure to get in touch with master craftsmen like the team at Marble Supreme to get your dream kitchen. Richly veined marble countertops will be a big kitchen trend this year and create a beautiful contrast with bold kitchen units.

Kitchen office

With the shift to home working for a number of people looking to be long term, people are looking at creating long-term solutions to home working. A kitchen is the ideal spot for an office and designers have caught onto this and have created useful kitchen/office units. Units that can be concealed for general kitchen usage, can also be brought out for the work-day in a number of seconds. When remodelling there are also layouts that can be chosen that allow a home office to be out of the way, but still an enjoyable place to work from.

Bold kitchen units

If a white minimalist kitchen isn’t for you, then there’s plenty of scope to get experimental with your unit colours. Burgundy and forest green are extremely popular and pair well with marble and gold finishes, but also brighter colours and other earth tones will make more of an appearance this year.

Sustainable kitchens

Sustainability is becoming more and more important, and anything people can do to make their life more sustainable is often welcomed. There are lots of steps that can be taken to make your kitchen sustainable, from small measures like an efficient recycling bin to only buying energy-efficient appliances.

Statement lighting

In the excitement of getting a new kitchen fitted, the lighting can become a bit of an afterthought. But, after all the time and energy spent creating your dream kitchen, it has now become accepted that lighting is also extremely important. This has caused an increase in interesting and arty lighting which can set your kitchen apart. In 2022 the need for practical lighting is well understood, but there’s no reason that practical can’t also look good. When creating your new kitchen make sure to browse all the different lighting options on offer to make sure you find the perfect light for you.

Smart appliances

Like most things, kitchen appliances are getting smarter and smarter with improvements in technology. Every year we see new groundbreaking energy and labour-saving devices on the market and 2022 will be no exception. From fridges that order your shopping to smart taps and ovens that cook recipes for you, the futuristic possibilities for your new kitchen are endless.

Dining Booths

Combining the dining room and kitchen is nothing new, but if you have a smaller kitchen, or just want to make the best use of your space then a dining booth is great for you. The dining booth gained popularity in 2021 and is set to keep increasing in popularity for its practical and efficient use of space.

Gold finishes

Metallic finishes in the kitchen have been popular over the years, with silver, copper and brass in recent years. 2022 however, is the year for gold finishes. These luxury metallic finishes are set to compete with the usual stainless steel finishes that are more common in homes across the country. These gold finishes look amazing when paired with marble and bold units, especially with dark colours like forest green and navy.

There has never been so many options for creating your perfect kitchen. If you want to get the best from your kitchen when using luxury materials then you should make sure to work with expert craftsmen, like the team at Marble Supreme with over 65 years of experience in bespoke kitchen worktops design and installation.

Top Tips For Bathroom Remodelling https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/top-tips-for-bathroom-remodelling/ Thu, 02 Dec 2021 13:33:37 +0000 https://marblesupreme.newicon.dev/?p=50330 The post Top Tips For Bathroom Remodelling appeared first on Marble Supreme.

]]>

Having a beautiful, relaxing bathroom to come home to at the end of a stressful day is a dream we all aspire to. There’s nothing like sinking into a warm bath, or standing beneath the hot stream of a shower to ease your muscles and destress. So how do you go about creating your dream bathroom?

At Marble Supreme we’re experts in kitchen and bathroom worktop installations in Bristol and the South West, so we’ve put together our top tips to help your bathroom remodelling journey go as smoothly as possible. With our support, you can build a bathroom you can’t wait to come home to.

Remodelling your bathroom can be an extremely rewarding experience. You get to choose your materials to suit your taste and your lifestyle, and a new bathroom renovation not only benefits your quality of life but can also add significant monetary value to your home.

Consider future use

When you’re remodelling your bathroom, or any room in your house, it’s important to consider the long-term resilience of the materials picked as well as the design you opt for.

Those trending colours and patterns may look good now, but how long will it be until your style looks dated? Stick to trends that will look timeless and you’ll continue to love it in 10 years’ time.

As well as aesthetics, you need to consider whether your needs will change in the future.

Accessibility and practically is particularly important if you’re looking to stay in your current home for a long time. Opting for wider walkways and lower countertops can be a real benefit for people with limited mobility.

Storage is a top priority

One important feature to consider when remodelling your bathroom is whether or not your storage space is substantial enough or if it needs to be expanded.

There are endless possibilities for adding storage, whether you’d prefer it to be inbuilt, hidden or a feature itself, pre-planning will save you time and money later on in your remodelling journey. Having to add in storage space after your remodel is finished can be quite difficult and may ultimately stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of your interior design. Cluttered countertops may ruin the aesthetic of your bathroom as well as pose the risk of staining to your chosen countertop material. Having ample space away from your main surfaces for your everyday items, in an easy to reach spot, can make all the difference.

Plan out your lighting

If you’re lucky enough to have natural lighting in your bathroom, make the most of it! Adding large windows or skylights can help brighten up the room.

Artificial lighting can be just as effective, and you can even get playful with it. Adding spotlights can light up dark corners or provide mood lightning. Good lighting can really open up a room, creating the illusion that it’s even bigger than it really is.

Carefully consider the materials you use

There is a wide range of different types of stone that work well as bathroom countertops. Whether you prefer style or durability, there is a stone for you.

The maintenance required for caring and cleaning different stones varies, so be sure to consider just how much time you can dedicate to your worktops. As a high traffic area in your home, your bathroom is susceptible to lots of water, soap, and cosmetic and cleaning chemicals so it’s important that your chosen materials can withstand this.

Finding the right choice of stone for your bathroom worktops can be daunting but it’s important to consider their individual properties. A good bathroom worktop should strike the perfect balance of functionality and style sufficient enough to meet the demands of how you live.

Stone such as quartz and marble offer multiple-use as flooring or tiles too.

Unsure which material to choose? Check out our guide to choosing bathroom worktops or vanity tops

Prioritise proper ventilation

One of the most neglected aspects of remodelling a bathroom is ventilation. Having bad ventilation can lead to mildew, damp and even mould in your bathroom. If you don’t have a window that can be opened to let in fresh air, we recommend installing an air vent or fan to allow the room to dry out between uses.

A good fan can improve the air quality, eliminate odours and draw out moisture.

As a room that sees plenty of water and steam it’s important to ensure it can air out and dry to avoid issues developing. Without proper ventilation your stone worktops, and any other materials and items in your bathroom may deteriorate faster.

There are several options for ventilation so be sure to pick one that suits your needs.

Of course, there are many more things to consider when remodelling any room in your home, but those are just a few tips we think are most important for bathroom remodelling. We hope this has helped you on your remodelling journey!

It’s not something that crosses many people’s minds when first designing their new kitchen, but whether you choose a worktop material that is sustainable is an important factor for anyone who is serious about creating a eco-concious kitchen.

Not all products are sustainable, and some quarrying for natural stone does negatively effect local ecosystems and create huge carbon footprints.

If you’re set on having a particular material that needs to be shipped or transported over a long distance, consider whether you’re able to offset it’s carbon footprint.

When picking any sort of material or item for your kitchen, consider how long-lasting it is. Will you need to replace it often? Is there a less-wasteful option available?

There are many worktop materials such as granite that are notoriously hardwearing and can last decades if they’re cared for properly. Splashing out on something that is unlikely to need regular repairs or replacements can be worthwhile and save you money in the long-term.

Embrace technology

There are hundred of smart appliances that can support you on your journey to sustainability.

Small details such as opting for boiling water taps can reduce water consumption and are a great alternative to boiling the kettle every hours or so.

Even which dishwasher you choose can influence how energy efficient your home is. Look out for energy star ratings to ensure you pick appliances that aren’t going to waste energy and money.

Reduce, reuse & recycle

Recycling old items and materials can be quite a fun family activity if a it of DIY appeals to you.

Even simple things like using worktop offcuts as coasters or paperweights can add a quirky touch to your home.

Giving reclaimed materials a new lease on life can be just as fun as it is good for the environment. Materials such as cork and wood can be reshaped and reworked to suit a new purpose with the right idea.

Bring the outside in

The rise in popularity of cacti, succulents and more have not been unnoticed by interior design experts. Bringing the outside in is not just trendy, but can be beneficial in other unexpected ways.

Certain plants are particularly good at purifying air and oxygenating the space it lives in.

Develop your green thumb and experiment with being self-sufficient with the addition of a small herb garden on your countertop or windowsill.

Setting up space in your kitchen design for potted plants, herbs & vegetables is a brilliant way to soften up the harsh edges of stone worktops.

Eco-friendly cleaning products

The products you use can contribute to environment pollution. Cleaning products are notoriously toxic, but there’s an easy alterative! The market for eco-friendly cleaning products has been growing steadily, with plenty of options to choose from to meet all your needs.
